Nynke van den Bergh, director of music theatre

The Dutch director Nynke van den Bergh (Amsterdam, 1979) Studied Theatre Studies at the University of Amsterdam (MA in 2003). During her studies she found out that directing is her passion, and therefore she participated in various intensive (physical) acting- and directing courses (for example with the Russian director Sergej Ostrenko). She started directing already during her studies.
After her studies Nynke gained experience as assistant director at Schauspielhaus Leipzig (Germany), Holland Opera (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) and Opera Zuid (Maastricht, The Netherlands). At the latter company, she worked with a variety of directors, such as Katja Czellnik, Bruno Berger-Gorski, David Prins, Nicola Glück and Frank van Laecke. In 2011 she had the honour to assist the great German director Harry Kupfer at his staging of the opera Kat’a Kabanova (Janacek).
In 2010 her career as an opera director took off. In this year she co-directed Le Nozze di Figaro (with Sybrand van der Werf) for Opera Zuid. After this successful début numerous productions followed: for Opera Festa she directed Iphigénie en Aulide (2011), La Sonnambula (2013) and Cavalleria Rusticana (2015), for Bravi Bravi Ernani (semiscenical, 2011), for Koor Lokaal Alceste (2012) and Carmen (2014), for Compagno Illesio Dido and Aeneas/Jepthe (2015). For Opera Zuid she staged le Tableau Parlant (2012), Pagliacci (co-directing with Miranda van Kralingen, 2013) and Jeugdopera Carmen (2015). For Opera 2.0 she directed two opera's on actual themes: El Rey (2015) and De berg van Tom (2016).
With Barokopera Amsterdam started a longterm relationship in 2015/2016 with Don Giovanni 1815. In 2017 followed Le Nozze di Figaro. Since 2016 she also has directed the annual open air production at Opera Nijetrijne: in 2016 Mondo aan de Scheene (a Dutch adaptation of Haydn's Il Mondo della Luna) and in 2017 De wereld op d'r Kop (based on Salieri's on Il Mondo alla Rovescia). With both companies she continues to work in the future: summer 2018 Orlando de Razende (based on Haydn's Orlando Paladino) for Opera Nijetrijne and in season 2018/2019 De ontmaskering van Peter de Grote (about Tsar Peter the Great) for Barokopera Amsterdam.
Recently (premiere june 15th 2018) Nynke directed Le Tragedia di Claudio M, a music theatre project about composer Claudio Monteverdi, for Musica in Scena.
